CBS Mitchelstown identified energy savings
Background
CBS Mitchelstown is an all-boys secondary school with a range of modern facilities. These include woodwork, construction studies and computer rooms, an indoor sports hall, a canteen and a dedicated autistic spectrum/multi-disciplinary unit.
The project
The school calculated that it has an annual energy spend of €25,566 (ex VAT). Following a visit to the school, an SEAI Energy Advisor supplied a report detailing a range of energy saving opportunities.
Recommendations included:
- Read the electricity meter and natural gas meter regularly
- Replace T8 fluorescent lighting with T5 lighting
- Provide time-clock control for exterior lights
- Set space heating room/zones temperature to 18⁰C
- Use 7 day time-clock control to switch off storage heating for weekends and regulate heat output in line with weather and occupancy
- Provide 7 day time-clock control for convector heaters and hot water heater units
- Enable power management for all ICT equipment on the school network
Students from Transition Year and the school's green team assisted with raising awareness around energy use. Many of these low and no cost opportunities for savings have now been implemented.
"Being part of the school's Energy Awareness team was great, especially when you see the impact small everyday changes can have and how they can lead to significant energy savings in our school. The work we did on this programme linked very well with our Green Flag work, and as a result An Taisce awarded the school our second flag, the Energy Flag."
Results and key achievements
- €25,566 (ex VAT) annual energy spend calculated
- 11.5% energy savings identified
- Reduced carbon footprint
