This post-primary school went from a D1 to a B3 Building Energy Rating (BER). To achieve this, extensive fabric upgrades were carried out through the 2020 Schools Energy Retrofit Pathfinder programme.

Background

St. Anne's Community School was selected through the Public Sector Pathfinder Programme. The school was comprehensively assessed to identify suitable upgrade measures. These needed to deliver value to both the school and the programme learnings.

The project

Fabric upgrades included:

  • Filled cavity wall with insulation
  • Insulated exposed ring beam under canopy and soffit to prevent cold bridging
  • Replacement of existing windows, doors and roof lights
  • Installation of air tightness membrane
  • Removal and replacement of existing rockwall insulation with of 150mm insulated plaster board for roof

Mechanical and electrical upgrades included the installation of the following:

  • LED lighting system with occupancy and daylight control
  • 4 kWp Solar PV system
  • Time controls on water heaters
  • New high-efficiency gas boilers, insulation of pipework and new building management system
